Greetings and welcome to GISH PICKS: A GUIDE TO CULTURAL ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES, a free weekly e-newsletter/blog I created as a service to the Houston community in 2003 in which I cull from the loads of activities in our city and pick three weekend events (“PICKS”) to recommend to parents, caregivers, and educators all over Houston. I’m a mom and am always looking for cultural – yet FUN! – Events for my family and I am so happy to share them with YOU.

My business grows by word of mouth so please enjoy the events and please share this blog. And be sure to tell the organizations you visit that you heard about them from me. And if you’re in Facebooklandia, please sidle over there and like our GISH PICKS Facebook page and share it with your friends and family and elsewhere on social media, too. Don’t want to miss any posts? Click on the drop-down LIKE button and then check “See First.” Thanks!

Happy March! Today is SUPER TUESDAY so I hope you’ll vote, no matter your party or candidate. Take your kiddos with you and they can see what it’s like and be inspired to vote when they’re old enough. There’s a lot going on this week so, as always, I had to comb through a lot to PICK three. Actually, I PICK-ed more than three – I found two arts events (both with activities for the entire family) and four musicals for all ages. Enjoy!

Are you knee deep in junk/clutter/toys/you name it? If you are looking for de-cluttering help, please contact my friend Marian Bell – you can call her at 713.447.0436 or email She’s helped me, a reluctant de-clutterer, sooo much! On another note, Up with People is coming to Houston with a show later this month and they need host families. If you are interested in considering that for the week of March 21-28, please click here to email Ethan Brosnan. He’ll give you all the details and can sign you up as a host family.

What kind of mom are you? According to this video, I’m the “Hot Mess Mom”! Watch it and see who you are. If nothing else, it’ll make you laugh…which is a good thing as we all juggle kids, schedules, food prep, and more.

Picks for the Weekend of March 4, 2016

Hands-On Houston

This Saturday, March 5, from 11am-3pm, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is leading a workshop on patterned plates. Roll your clay into a slab, or use your fingers to pinch and press it into a mold to create your plate. Make your platter pretty! Experiment with pattern strips, mark making tools, and stamps to add texture and imagery to your creation. For inspiration, be sure to stop by their exhibition spaces, featuring At Your Service, to see how other artists have approached the plate in their artwork. PLEASE NOTE: The activity will take place indoors and is on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. No supplies will be handed out after 2:50 PM.

Hands-On Houston” is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Families and children of all ages are welcome to come any time between 11am and 3pm to participate in a 15-20 minute activity. Materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product and history of craft. More information about all the Museum’s educational events can be found here.

The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is located at 4848 Main Street. It’s always free and the hours are Tuesdays–Saturdays, 10am-5pm and Sundays, noon-5pm.

GISH PICKS is a free weekly email in which I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services.
Please note that I "highlight" events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests. I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? You can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.
