WHAT'S NEW THIS WEEK?

I hope that this week finds you enjoying a break in your spring or at least a spring in your step! It’s spring break week for many of us, so take some time to unplug, kick back, and chill out with your loved ones. We’re going camping and I can’t wait!

I’ve rounded up some spring break fun for families this week so there’s no excuse for sitting at home. Get on your running shoes and GO FIND FUN!

Events for the Week of March 17, 2010

Children's Museum of Houston

IT’S TIME FOR SPRING BREAK FUN!

Here are some spots where you can find fun all week:

  • The Children’s Museum of Houston is celebrating a new first every day in honor of the one year anniversary of their cool new building. Families are invited to dance to DJ Zin, sing Happy Birthday, and party every day this week at the Museum during Spring Break as they attempt to break World Records with your help. On Thursday, March 18, the record attempt is “The Most Paper Rocket Launches in a Day” – kids can launch a new record while learning all about aerodynamics. On Friday, March 19, they’ll be attempting “Most Calories Burned in a Dance Marathon” – kids can get their groove on to see how many calories they can burn as we set the record to the tunes of DJ Zin. Saturday, March 20 will be the day to attempt “Most Weight Supported by an Aluminum Foil Boat” as kids put their engineering skills to the test by building the strongest boat out of one sheet of foil. “Most People to Walk Across Oobleck” will be the goal on Sunday, March 21 as kids will attempt to walk across the gooey mess of Oobleck. The Children’s Museum is open all week, 10am-6pm (late on Thursday until 8pm). Tickets are $8/adults, $7/youth and seniors.

  • Discover a healthier you at The Health Museum, Houston’s only interactive science center, during Spring Break. Their “Health & Wellness Expo 2010” is the perfect opportunity for families to explore fun and entertaining ways to stay active and healthy all year long. Kids activities include games and craft stations, healthy snack stations, and a family science lab. And maybe this is more than you wanted to know, but it’s “National Kidney Month” so they’ve got a special program called “Tinkle, Tinkle, Little Kidney” as well as their continuous shows, “You: The Exhibit” and “The Amazing Body Pavilion.” The Museum is open 9am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday and noon-5pm on Sunday. Tickets are $8/adults and $6/youth and seniors.

  • Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Bayou Bend - The Museum has a handy dandy list on their website of 10 ways to enjoy Spring Break onsite. The top 10 activities include: 1) See the current exhibition “An American Season”, 2) Enjoy the spring weather in their sculpture garden, 3) participate in guided art activities for the whole family, 4) see 2 great films and meet 2 great filmmakers, 5) become an art detective by dropping by for “Gallery Investigations”, 6) Check out an MFAH “Family Pack” from the front desk, 7) Enjoy Café Express – and take advantage of their combo deal for groups of 10 or more, 8) see the gardens of Bayou Bend in full bloom – and enjoy their Family Day this Sunday, 1-5pm, 9) Browse the gift shop, 10) Become a member and get a free glow ball and participate in the 3/17 members-only free art-making activity. Whew! The Museum is open 10am weekdays and Saturday and 12:15pm on Sundays – check their website for closing times. Tickets are $7/adults, $3.50/youth and seniors, and free for Museum members.

  • Houston Museum of Natural Science - With 2 locations, one in Houston and one in Sugar Land, HMNS is packed with fun for everyone! They’re open all week, 9am-6pm daily and from 2-8pm the permanent exhibition halls are free for everyone at the main location this week only. The exhibition “Magic: The Science of Wonder” will be special fun – it was created in-house and is an examination of how science and magic are intertwined, tapping into our universal desire to know "How does that work?" Magic is the perfect subject to inspire people of all ages—especially kids—to learn about the science behind the magic, and the world around them. And mark your calendar now for their 3/27 “Family Day” at the Challenger Space Center. Ticket prices for the Museum range from $2.50-$15 (which includes group rates).

  • Houston Zoo - The Zoo is open daily 9am-7pm and you can expect it to be crowded this week. However, I recommend getting there first thing and you should have no problems walking and talking with the animals. Zoo officials have noted that this week is the last week of the rodeo, so the traffic might be extra congested. They recommend riding METRO or carpooling. Tickets are $11/adults, $7/children 2-11 and $6/seniors.

  • A.D. Players - You can catch “Laura Ingalls Wilder: Voice of the Prairie” daily through Saturday at 10:30am. Based on the writings of Laura Ingalls Wilder, this show tells the life story of one of America's most popular authors. The play brings to life Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories, providing children with a glimpse into the author's life as an American pioneer. Tickets are $11/each and the show takes place at the St. Luke’s UMC Rotunda Theatre at 3471 Westheimer.

  • Main Street Theater - “Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business” is onstage all this week at 11:30am. In case you’re not familiar with her, Junie is the world’s most precocious kindergartner. In this show, she mistakenly believes her new baby brother is actually a monkey. She starts taking bids from Lucille and That Grace, her “bestest” friends, for the first look at him, but then Meanie Jim and Crybaby William enter the fray and things get completely out of control. Tickets are $12/each..

Movie Reel

KID MOVIES ARE SO MUCH FUN.

You can have lots of fun getting caught up on movies this week – “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid” opens Friday and is based on the best-selling book of the same name that kids everywhere love (by the way, if you’re looking for a great “Wimpy” book that kids can fill out and interact with, check out the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-it-Yourself book). “Alice in Wonderland” is still onscreen as is “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”, “Tooth Fairy”, “Avatar”, “Dolphins and Whales 3D: Tribes of the Ocean,” “Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs” and “Bugs in 3D” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.”

Family Friendly Restaurants

THIS WEEK'S ATTRACTION...FAMILY FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS. For more attractions, go to www.gishcreative.com/attractions.htm.

If you’re like me, you have PLENTY of time to bond with your kids this week. What better way to bond than over a fun, free, or family-friendly meal?! Check out my list of Houston area family-friendly restaurants. For free kid food, log onto this really cool site that will guide you any day of the week: www.kidseatfor.com.

And before you head out the door with your forks and knives, here are my quick tips for eating out with kids:

  • bring your own activities for children that will keep them occupied, such as coloring books, smaller board games, action figures – whatever the kids are into

  • go to restaurants during non-peak hours and take more than one table -- the kids can be at one table with all their activities and the adults at another, conversing!

  • prepare the kids before going into a restaurant to remind them to keep their manners

  • get your kids to start thinking in advance about what they might want to eat at this particular restaurant, so that they’re not starving while trying to decide (many restaurants have menus online)

  • order appetizers so that some food can come early for the hungrier ones in the bunch

  • eat at non-peak hours so that there’s less excitement, less of a wait, less people to stare at your kids, and your food will come quicker

  • if you have a picky eater, you might want to check the menu before you go – in fact, not all “family-friendly” restaurants have a kids’ menu, so keep that in mind.

Bon Appétit!

GISH PICKS is a free weekly email in which I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? You can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
