"EARTH DAY" IS APRIL 22, AND BOY ARE WE CELEBRATING OUR PLANET.
In 1962,
Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson headed to Washington D.C., seeking the help
of President John F. Kennedy to take a stand on environmental issues. His
visit resulted in an eleven state conservation tour by the President in 1963
but it wasn’t until 1970 that the first “Earth Day” demonstration was held.
How far we have come since then!
Here's how Houston is marking "Earth Day":
SATURDAY, APRIL 19 AND SUNDAY, APRIL 20, 9am-3pm
Houston Zoo (www.houstonzoo.org)
Kids will enjoy fun conservation activities, listen to informative keeper
chats or participate in fun contests and a recycling relay race. Kids can
get “go green” tips from ‘Recycling Ben’ and meet Waste Management Cycler,
the robot who makes recycling fun!
SATURDAY, APRIL 19, all day
Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council (www.galvestonnaturetourism.org)
