GISH PICKS!

Welcome to this week's "Gish Picks", where I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services. Please note that I "highlight" these events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests.

I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to advertise on Gish Picks? Advertisers can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.

Earth Day April 22

"EARTH DAY" IS APRIL 22, AND BOY ARE WE CELEBRATING OUR PLANET.

In 1962, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson headed to Washington D.C., seeking the help of President John F. Kennedy to take a stand on environmental issues. His visit resulted in an eleven state conservation tour by the President in 1963 but it wasn’t until 1970 that the first “Earth Day” demonstration was held. How far we have come since then!

Here's how Houston is marking "Earth Day":

SATURDAY, APRIL 19 AND SUNDAY, APRIL 20, 9am-3pm
Houston Zoo (www.houstonzoo.org)

Kids will enjoy fun conservation activities, listen to informative keeper chats or participate in fun contests and a recycling relay race. Kids can get “go green” tips from ‘Recycling Ben’ and meet Waste Management Cycler, the robot who makes recycling fun!

SATURDAY, APRIL 19, all day
Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council (www.galvestonnaturetourism.org)

"Nature Exploration Day" takes place on Galveston’s East End with lots of nature-inspired outdoor activities for families -- all for free.

SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 10am-4pm
Houston Arboretum & Nature Center (www.houstonarboretum.org)

At the Arboretum you'll find family-oriented activities, a locally-grown compost and mulch sale, an organic produce market, 25 Earth-friendly vendors, live music and a kid’s zip line.

SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 9am-5pm
Children's Museum of Houston (www.cmhouston.org)

They're offering lots of activities including "Where Does Our Garbage Go?"; "Tree Shapes Puzzle"; "Explorations into Nature’s Power"; "Environmental Cleanup Informance"; "How Does Green Chemistry Impact You?"; and “A Piece of Peace” by Hope Stone Inc. Kid's Play dancers.

TUESDAY, APRIL 22, 10am-4pm
The Real School (www.therealschoolhouston.org)

Kids will learn about recycling everyday items in fun ways, help create a mural with recycled items and try their hand at gardening.

TUESDAY, APRIL 22, 10am-7pm
John C. Freeman Weather Museum (www.wxresearch.org)

It's the Museum's second birthday and they are celebrating not only "Earth Day" but also the opening of their new exhibition, "The City on the Bayou". There will be plenty of family fun here.

Lemonade Day!

LEARN ABOUT "LEMONADE DAY" THIS WEEKEND AT THE ASTROS GAMES.

"Lemonade Day" is an annual city-wide event on Sunday, May 4, produced by Prepared 4 Life (P4L) and its many community partners. Businesses, families and communities work together to produce "Lemonade Day", which is a fun, family-oriented activity designed to train thousands of young people how to be successful entrepreneurs. You can learn all about "Lemonade Day" this weekend by going to any of the three Astros games (April 18, 19, and 20). Jeff Bagwell will be available to sign up children and hand out backpacks during the game. Then on Saturday, April 26, the Houston Zoo is hosting the "Best Tasting Lemonade Contest". 50 children will be selected randomly to set up their stand at the zoo and their lemonade will be judged by celebrity judges. Awards will be given to the top 3 winners!

Summer Camp Surgery

SUMMER IS FUN AT THE HEALTH MUSEUM.

This summer, treat your kids to an interactive summer camp at The Health Museum. These hands-on camps are a great way for kids ages 5 - 13 to investigate some of their favorite topics.

Popular camps like "Mini Med School" and "Savory Science" are back, along with brand new camps: "Itty Bitty Bodies", where the youngest campers get to learn more about how their bodies work and "Superhero Science", an inside look at the science behind your favorite superheroes’ super powers. Plus, all campers will get to see the special summer exhibit, "Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body".

The summer camp season runs from June 2–August 22 and camp hours are 9am-3pm daily. After Camp Care is available for working parents from 3–5pm. Schedule, descriptions and answers to frequently asked questions are available by calling The Health Museum at 713.521.1515 or online at www.thehealthmuseum.org. You can register your kids online now!
