WHAT'S YOUR PICK THIS WEEKEND?

Greetings and welcome to GISH PICKS: A GUIDE TO CULTURAL ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES, a free weekly e-newsletter/blog I created as a service to the Houston community in 2003 in which I cull from the loads of activities in our city and pick three weekend events (“PICKS”) to recommend to parents, caregivers, and educators all over Houston. I’m a mom and am always looking for cultural – yet FUN! – events for my family and I am so happy to share them with YOU. My business grows by word of mouth so please enjoy the events and please share this blog. And be sure to tell the organizations you visit that you heard about them from me. And if you’re in Facebooklandia, please sidle over there and like our GISH PICKS Facebook page and share it with your friends and family and elsewhere on social media, too. Don’t want to miss any posts? Click on the drop-down LIKE button and then check “See First” under “In Your Newsfeed.” Thanks!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you fabulous mothers out there (which is ALL of us!). I’m going to skip right to this week’s VIDEO PICK because it’s that good. Grab your hankies and your coffee and get ready to cry a spell.

Some of you are still looking for summer camps, some of you have your summer all neatly organized, and some of you are half-way there. No matter the kind of parent you are, let me help you! Check out my camp PICKS here and here and here and then wander on over to THE SUMMER BOOK® ONLINE: A GUIDE TO HOUSTON DAY CAMPS AND CLASSES FOR KIDS AND TEENS, a guide I’ve been producing since 2003. I’ll also be highlighting ONE CAMP PER DAY on this Facebook page so be sure to check in there for ideas. My guide is the largest and most accurate online searchable database in Houston and you’re gonna love it when looking for camps! And, best of all, you can surf it from anywhere – while at the beach, when the kids are asleep, while in the carpool line…

Have a great week, love one another, please share this, and GO.FIND.FUN.

Picks for the Weekend of May 6-8, 2016

Houston Dragon Boat Festival

EXCITING BOAT EVENTS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

The Texas Dragon Boat Association is hosting two cool-n-unique events this weekend: on Saturday, May 7 there is the Houston Dragon Boat Festival and on Sunday, May 8 there is “Beating in the Bayou” – paddleboat races. Enjoy the view of downtown Houston as the dragons and paddlers fly across the water with the skyline behind them. It’s a blast for everyone – adults and kids – because there will be new races every 15-20 minutes. Cheer on the teams that are paddling their hearts out! There is plenty of space in which to hang out and there will be cultural performances throughout the day, food vendors available, and entertainment from local groups.

The admission is free and the boating events will take place at 901 York Street, just east of downtown Houston.

St. Stephen's School Award Winning Students Film Screening

CHILDREN’S FILMS – BY KIDS FOR THE WORLD.

Anita Long is a filmmaker, photographer, and teacher at St. Stephen’s School. She worked with a group of students to create socially responsible films for Houston Compassion Week 2016 as well as a regular part of the curriculum. Bring your kids and let them see films by their peers! By the way, Anita’s got a great resume: she is the owner of Long Film Studio, the President of Women in Film and Television – Houston (I just wrote about them, here) and the founder of the very cool Ink Spots Museum, a venue inspired by her famous dad Huey Long.

The films will be screening tonight starting at 7pm at the River Oaks Theatre.

The Printing Museum

THE PRINTING MUSEUM LOVES MOMS.

If you’ve never been to The Printing Museum, be sure to stop by this weekend to enjoy their public tour for moms this Saturday, May 7 from 2-3:30pm. It’s a great way to be introduced to this charming museum in a relaxed manner – plus their public tours are very thorough and informative. While at the Museum, check out the three exhibitions on view. For a complete list and more about them, click here.

Located in Houston’s vibrant North Montrose District at 1324 W. Clay Street, The Printing Museum is comprised of multiple galleries featuring permanent and temporary exhibitions, a theater, gift shop, and letterpress, book binding, lithography, and papermaking studios. Admission is free for kids 13 and under and $8/14 years old and $6/55 years old and up.

World Labyrinth Day

CELEBRATING WORLD LABYRINTH DAY BY WALKING.

I’m excited to announce that I’m hosting another walk on the Hines Center labyrinth this Saturday, May 7, 1:30-3:30pm. Children are always welcome at my walks! Their free spirits are so much fun to watch. See all the details and registration info here. The Hines Center is an outreach of Christ Church Cathedral and the labyrinth itself was designed by Cathedral member and my friend Mike McEnany. I’ll start out by introducing you to the Hines Center and to labyrinths in general. We’ll then delve into this particular labyrinth and how to walk it as a meditation practice. I like to incorporate art into my walks since that’s a great way to center yourself and access your soul, so there will be art supplies for you to enjoy a take-home art activity. Plus, it’s World Labyrinth Day so we will create a space for focused attention on that. I look forward to seeing you there!

GISH PICKS is a free weekly email in which I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services.
Please note that I "highlight" events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests. I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? You can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.
