WHAT'S YOUR PICK THIS WEEKEND?
My two favorite things about May are the Houston Art Car Parade and Mother’s Day! They always fall on the same weekend so my continuous struggle to balance my art and my mothering are played out with the two worlds colliding on the second Sunday in May. I’ll probably never get it just right, but that’s ok as long as I am having fun doing both. And thankfully, since I’m the mom and get to choose how I’ll spend my time on Mother’s Day, I always combine Art Car events with Mama’s Day. Read below for how to get the most out of this weekend and to catch a glimpse at my car, HUBBA HUBBA ART CAR– it’s #151 so don’t miss it!
In honor of Mother’s Day, the International Museum of Women has a new online exhibition, MAMA’S WORK: MOTHERHOOD AROUND THE GLOBE. It’s a comfort to know women around the world also struggle with balancing work and motherhood – but how can we lessen the load? This show attempts to answer that and other questions mothers face. And here in Houston, the “Queens of Creativity” (gotta love that name!) have organized a special show honoring mothers and celebrating motherhood. Their “Mother Earth Exhibition” will be on view all month at the Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston/MOCAH.
It’s almost summer, so get ready! You can purchase THE SUMMER BOOK: A GUIDE TO HOUSTON DAY CAMPS AND CLASSES FOR KIDS AND TEENS online and from several local wonderful retailers listed on my site. Thanks also to the advertisers in the book – without them, it would be a mere dream. Please pay special attention to the scrolling list of my advertisers in the banner ad in this newsletter and support them. If you work downtown, come see me tomorrow at the Central Library downtown at noon as I present "Gabbing with Gish," a series of short, interactive talks on select topics throughout May and June on Thursdays during the lunch hour. Bring a brown bag and let’s get fired up! Tomorrow’s talk will be about how to have a fun summer with your kids and I’ll also be selling my book.
Tonight I’ll be at the City’s new Green Building Resource Center (inside the City of Houston Permitting Center) during the event “Celebrate Green Houston,” a fundraiser for one of my fave organizations, Houston Greeters. From 6-8pm, you can join The Honorable Bill and Andrea White, Federico Marques of Ruggles Green, and Gordon Quan, Chairman of the Houston Greeters, to celebrate Houston's achievements in efficiency and sustainability. Tickets are $15/advance and can be purchased here or $20 at the door. There will be healthy bites from Ruggles Green, wine tastings, art exhibits, inspired fashion designs and eclectic tunes as well as tours of the Resource Center. I personally can’t wait to see this new building that I’ve heard so much about. My art car will be parked in front, so you can’t miss the party.
I’m still posting (almost) daily about “Houston Gems” – places, people, and things that make Houston great – so follow me on twitter (www.twitter.com/sarahgish) or “like” my new Facebook page to learn about cool Houston each day. All my past gems are archived on twitter (search for #houstongems) and on the Facebook page, so you can grab them and EXPLORE! While you’re in Facebook land, please slide over to my GISH PICKS site to like it too. Thanks so much for helping me spread the word on cultural activities for families.
Have a great week and GO.FIND.FUN.
