Greetings and welcome to GISH PICKS: A GUIDE TO CULTURAL ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES, a free weekly e-newsletter/blog I created as a service to the Houston community in 2003 in which I cull from the loads of activities in our city and pick three weekend events (“PICKS”) to recommend to parents, caregivers, and educators all over Houston. I’m a mom and am always looking for cultural – yet FUN! – events for my family and I am so happy to share them with YOU. My business grows by word of mouth so please enjoy the events and please share this blog. And be sure to tell the organizations you visit that you heard about them from me. And if you’re in Facebooklandia, please sidle over there and like our GISH PICKS Facebook page and share it with your friends and family and elsewhere on social media, too. Don’t want to miss any posts? Click on the drop-down LIKE button and then check “See First” under “In Your Newsfeed.” Thanks!

Two things are coming up this week -- Memorial Day on Monday, May 30 and the Children’s Museum of Houston’s “Mommy Mingle” on Wednesday, June 1 from 10am-noon. I hope you’ll stop by and see me at the Mingle – it features free coffee, snacks, and fun for moms and dads and kids up to 36 months.

And because I know you want to know, here’s the history of Memorial Day, written with help from Wikipedia. It’s a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces and is observed every year on the last Monday of May. It originated as “Decoration Day” after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Yes – Memorial Day signifies the kick-off to summer so GET READY! Kids will soon be under foot so if you need summer camp help -- check out my camp PICKS here and here and here and then wander on over to THE SUMMER BOOK® ONLINE: A GUIDE TO HOUSTON DAY CAMPS AND CLASSES FOR KIDS AND TEENS, a guide I’ve been producing since 2003. I’ll also be highlighting ONE CAMP PER DAY on this Facebook page so be sure to check in there for ideas. My guide is the largest and most accurate online searchable database in Houston and you’re gonna love it when looking for camps! And, best of all, you can surf it from anywhere – while at the beach, when the kids are asleep, while in the carpool line…

I was very impressed when I heard the blues band Campfire Soul during the Pearland Earth Day festival last month. The lead singer and drummer are the young daughters of the band’s guitarist and they really are good! I wanted to tout them because if you see them on the bill anywhere, I recommend you go check them out. This week’s VIDEO PICK isn’t the best quality, but you’ll get the idea. Trust me: they are good live! The lead singer has a bluesy voice as deep as any adult’s.

Picks for the Weekend of May 27-30, 2016

Storytime Tours at Rienzi

This summer, introduce children to the magic of art and literature in an intimate, house-museum setting. Storytime Tours at Rienzi are fun and interactive, featuring tales that relate to themes highlighted in the wonderful works of art in the Rienzi Collection.

Rienzi, located at 1406 Kirby Drive, is the house museum for European decorative arts of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Storytime Tours take place every Wednesday at 10 a.m. in June and July. Families are welcome to bring picnic lunches to enjoy in the gardens after the tour. Admission is FREE for all ages -- recommended ages are 3+. Reservations are suggested, but drop-ins are welcome. Visit or call 713.639.7800 to find out more.

Sometimes it’s hard to keep kids from squirming in their seats, so the best way to deal with that is to head to the silver screen outdoors. There are a couple of fun family films coming up:Wreck-It Ralph” is coming to the Central Green Park at the Willow Fork Drainage District this Saturday, May 28 at dusk. And mark your calendars now to see Jurassic World” (the latest in the series) on Saturday, June 4 at 8:30pm at Discovery Green.

Both events are free and open to the public and picnics are welcome.

Memorial Day

Enjoy two days of fun – May 28 and 29 – at the annual Memorial Day Weekend in The Woodlands produced by The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau in Town Green Park, 2099 Lake Robbins Drive. Memorial Day Weekend in The Woodlands pays tribute to all military service men and women who lost their lives while serving the United States, and also honors local veterans who serve as a symbol for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice of life to protect our freedom. This two-day festival features live music, children’s activities, strolling entertainers and more at Town Green Park. As an extra bonus, each evening concludes with a dazzling fireworks display choreographed to a patriotic soundtrack.

This event is free and open to the public.

GISH PICKS is a free weekly email in which I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services.
Please note that I "highlight" events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests. I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? You can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
