WHAT'S NEW THIS WEEK?

Are you wondering how to encourage your child(ren) to find their passion? I had the same concerns so I began researching the topic and trying things out with my own two kids. I came up with a workshop on this topic a few years back that combines learning with art -- a great way to access the intuitive mind. I now present "I Can Fly!" workshops for adults, children, and families all over town. I can come to your group or you and your kids can join me this Saturday, July 10, 2-4pm at Body Mind & Soul. We'll talk about how to "fly," which is doing what you love to do. Parents will learn how to encourage their children to follow their heart, kids will learn about what makes them sing, and the family group will get to make a piece of art together. This is a great way to connect with your children and also to get in touch with your own inner artist. I'd love to see you there! Sign up early, as class size will be limited. It's $30 per pre-registered parent/child pair (children 6-10 years old, please); $35 for walk-ups. If you have more than one child you will be bringing, please add $5/child. Each attendee will receive a $25 gift certificate for Hollywood Frame Gallery. Can't make it this weekend? I have them regularly at Body Mind & Soul, so stay tuned via GISH PICKS.

Stay dry this week and find some place new to explore with your kids!

Events for the Week of July 7, 2010

TOUR HISTORIC FREEDMAN’S TOWN.

Here’s a chance to see Houston’s history unfolding in front of you. This Saturday, July 10, from 9:30am-2pm, visit the Rutherford B. H. Yates Museum, Inc. and various current archaeology sites beginning at 1314 Andrews Street in historic Fourth Ward/Freedman’s Town on the east side of Houston. During this special visitor’s day, you will learn about the achievements of local African Americans, you’ll get to see what they are researching in the digs, view Prairie View A & M Architecture and other exhibits, and see the endangered Historic Brick Streets. Freedman’s Town is the only remaining post Civil War National Historic District of its kind in the United States which was established by previously enslaved people immediately after emancipation. Since its designation in 1984, over 500 historic structures, including churches, have been destroyed and the historic brick streets have been damaged. Community leaders and educators are committed to the restoration of historic structures on their original homesteads and the preservation of the Freedman’s Town Churches and Brick Streets. They encourage the study of Freedman’s Town through cultural, archaeological, and architectural research, while providing internships to high school and university students.

Admission to the visitor’s day is $3/person.

FLYING HIGH WITH MOODY GARDENS

Get back to nature this weekend at Moody Gardens: they have teamed up with the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council to present “Birding 101,” a series of free classes designed to educate and excite people about the variety of bird life seen around Galveston Island. Participants meet at the Aquarium Pyramid lobby and the free classes are offered the second Saturday of each month. Moody Gardens is also hosting their annual “Summer Concert Series” – music every Friday night through August 6 at sundown at Palm Beach (their pseudo-beach area); the cost is $6/person after 6pm.

And if you’re worried about the effects of the Gulf oil spill, here’s what their website states: “Over July 4th weekend there were isolated instances of tar balls sited on Bolivar Peninsula and East Beach on Galveston Island. These small samples are likely to be from tankers entering the Houston Ship Channel and do not pose a threat to our beaches or coastline at this time. Galveston beaches are clean and open for business. Moody Gardens will continue to monitor the progress of the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill and will post updates on our website.”

I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? You can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support.
