GISH PICKS!

Welcome to this week's "Gish Picks", where I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services. Please note that I "highlight" these events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests.

I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? Advertisers can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. MOVIES GALORE...SUMMER'S GREAT FOR FAMILY FILMS!

  • AURORA PICTURE SHOW: This Saturday, July 11 from 7-8pm, there is a special event at the Children’s Museum hosted by the Aurora Picture Show featuring the Striking Viking Story Pirates. The Striking Viking Story Pirates was founded in 2003 by a group of Northwestern graduates who were saddened by the discrepancy between the arts-rich environments of their childhoods and the situations they saw in many under-resourced New York City public schools. Their solution was to show kids across New York City that their ideas, their words, and their stories were important. Since then, the Story Pirates have collected words and ideas from children across the country and brought their stories to life on stage and on film. In fact, the inspiration for every Story Pirates song, sketch or movie is an original story penned by a kid. Saturday night will be a presentation of videos of kids’ stories that they have produced recently and the Pirates will be available afterwards to discuss their process and interactions with kids. Please RSVP for this event with the Aurora Picture Show. Some other Aurora Picture Show screenings to catch this month are the film premiere of their first annual kids’ “Aurora Boot Camp” at the Aurora Office, 1524 Sul Ross on Friday, July 24 at 7pm and Star Trek/Sci Fi films in their “Not So Final Frontier” program on Saturday, July 25 at 7pm.

  • MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS: Over at the Museum of Fine Arts, you can catch their "Thursday Movie Matinee" on the second Thursday of the month in the summer. This Thursday, July 9 they are screening “The Sound of Music” at 2pm and on Thursday, August 13, they'll screen the Marx Brothers' "Duck Soup" at 2pm. Each matinee is preceded by a 42-minute Looney Tunes cartoon program at 11am.

  • ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE: And if it's British accents and Harry Potter you're craving, the much-touted and latest film in the Harry Potter love-fest, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", is at the center of a feast planned by the Alamo Drafthouse staff on Wednesday July 22 at 7:30pm. The event will feature a multi-course gourmet meal inspired by the Harry Potter Universe and, of course, a screening of the new film.

  • SUMMER FILM FESTIVALS:

  • AND HERE’S A FILM FOR PARENTS: “NURSERY UNIVERSITY”. There’s no need to worry about preschool success for your children, thanks to Docurama Film’s recently released acclaimed feature documentary “Nursery University,” which is available for purchase online. This unique film examines preschool mania through the eyes of five Manhattan families, revealing with humor and humanity the surprisingly elaborate process of applications, anxious parent-toddler interviews, placement lotteries and pricey consultants. Packed with bonus features including unseen footage and film festival Q&As with the parents and admission experts, the DVD offers both an instructive and highly amusing look at the madness of it all, and also includes bonus footage with advice for those who may find themselves faced with this challenging process for their own little darlings soon.

Houston Culture Kids Art and Reading Adventures

SPACETAKER AND KABOOM BOOKS ARE CULTURIZING OUR KIDS.

Spacetaker is reaching out to kids with their new “Houston Culture Kids: Art and Reading Adventures” program – this month’s fun will be this Saturday, July 11 from 2 to 5pm at the Spacetaker Artist Resource Center, 2101 Winter Street near downtown Houston. This afternoon of activities for parents and children 3-10 years old will include story time by Kaboom Books (check out their wonderful stores at 3116 Houston Avenue or 733 Studewood) and an art workshop. All supplies are provided, and children are encouraged to get messy and creative and to explore their ideas with different art materials. This week’s teaching artist is Lindsay Peyton, whose works in oil, pastels, charcoal and other media have been featured in galleries, arts festivals, and gathering places in and near Houston. Most recently, her works were shown at The Community Artists Collective "Of Women" show, in the City Artworks Teachers' Exhibition, and in one-woman shows at Karen Derr & Associates Realty Galveston and Houston Heights offices. A Houston native, Lindsay is a photojournalism graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.

Goodykoontz Museum of Girl Scout History

THIS WEEK'S ATTRACTION...GOODYKOONTZ MUSEUM OF GIRL SCOUT HISTORY. For more attractions, go to www.gishcreative.com/attractions.htm.

GIRL SCOUTS HISTORY ON VIEW.

As a former Girl Scout, this is exciting news to me: The San Jacinto Girl Scouts have announced the grand opening of the Program Place and Goodykoontz Museum of Girl Scout History, located next to their headquarters at 3110 Southwest Freeway. The $5.6 million building acquisition and renovation was part of Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council’s (GSSJC) successful Capital Campaign. The opening of this one-of-a-kind building was celebrated by alumnae, donors, city leaders and friends at a series of recent events. The Program Place is 14,000 square feet of space, just for Girl Scouts, including a theatre, expanded Girl Scout shop, stage, café and older girl lounge as well as park space and a fire pit for s’more roasts. The Goodykoontz Museum of Girl Scout History features timeline panels and interactive displays from the start of the Council in the 1920s until today. Current headquarters at 3110 Southwest Freeway will remain the Council’s administrative and training center. GSSJC is the largest council in terms of girl members in the country and the Program Place will help 6,500 additional girls per year take part in Girl Scouting. It is completely “girl-centric” as girl members had input on the design of the building as well as the building components. Girl Scouts of the USA was founded in 1912 and is the world's preeminent organization for girls, with more than 3.8 million girls and adult members.

ENJOY ART AND FAMILY FUN WITH YOUR KIDS AT BODY MIND & SOUL NEXT WEEKEND.

Join me next Saturday, July 18 from 2-4pm at Body Mind & Soul for my “follow your HeART” parent/child art workshop. This is a great opportunity to connect with your child (or children) in a unique way: by learning what makes them sing and by creating a work of art together that you will take home. We’ll come together for a quiet two hours to learn how to help your children find their bliss using concrete suggestions I’ll give you. This discussion will be followed by a family art activity specifically designed to reveal each person’s creativity and joy. Children will be encouraged to speak up about what makes their hearts sing! Sign up early, as class size will be limited.

$35 per parent/child pair (children 6-10 years old, please); if you have more than one child you will be bringing, please add $5/child. Each attendee will receive a $25 gift certificate from Hollywood Frame Gallery.
