WHAT'S YOUR PICK THIS WEEKEND?

Greetings and welcome to GISH PICKS: A GUIDE TO CULTURAL ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES, a free weekly e-newsletter/blog I created as a service to the Houston community in 2003 in which I cull from the loads of activities in our city and pick three weekend events (“PICKS”) to recommend to parents, caregivers, and educators all over Houston. I’m a mom and am always looking for cultural – yet FUN! – events for my family and I am so happy to share them with YOU. My business grows by word of mouth so please enjoy the events and please share this blog. And be sure to tell the organizations you visit that you heard about them from me. And if you’re in Facebooklandia, please sidle over there and like our GISH PICKS Facebook page and share it with your friends and family and elsewhere on social media, too. Don’t want to miss any posts? Click on the drop-down LIKE button and then check “See First” under “In Your Newsfeed.” Thanks!

Are you still needing summer camp help? Doncha worry -- many camps still have openings as you can see in our latest curated guide to camps, here. If you want a list of over 200 camps to choose from, click here to access THE SUMMER BOOK® ONLINE: A GUIDE TO HOUSTON DAY CAMPS AND CLASSES FOR KIDS AND TEENS, a guide I’ve been producing since 2003. Or you can remember my new web page: www.daycampshouston.com – pass it on and tell your friends. I’ll also be highlighting CAMP PICKS on my Facebook page so be sure to check in there for ideas. My guide is the largest and most accurate online searchable database in Houston and you’re gonna love it when looking for camps! And, best of all, you can surf it from anywhere.

I just came back from an AMAZING, two-week road trip for my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project and was thrilled to be able to share my journey via my Facebook page. If you’d like to see how much fun we had igniting lives, please check out that page, LIKE it, and then click “See first” on the “Like” drop-down button. I will be doing much more with this project soon so you can stay informed not only via our Facebook page but also via my IYL email list, which you can sign up for on the main project page. I’d love to have you along for the ride!

This week’s VIDEO PICK is one of those “just because” ones. It’s the middle of the summer and I am dreaming of Hawaii so I wanted to share musician Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole's beautiful rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” – enjoy!

Picks for the Weekend of July 21-24, 2016

FUN ON THE HILL.

In addition to free fun all season long, Miller Outdoor Theatre hosts a “Children’s Hilltop Festival” each July with short plays on their stage during one week at 11am. This year’s Festival is wrapping up with The Great Zoo Switcheroo” tomorrow (Thursday, July 21) at 11am andSanta’s Rockin’ Reindeer: Christmas in July!” on Friday, July 22 at 11am. In The Great Zoo Switcheroo,” Kenny Penguin and Penny Kangaroo just can’t get over how different they are—until they’re forced to work together to outwit an Exotic Animal Thief trying to kidnap them from the zoo. It’s a comedy about friendship by Austin native Max Langert. And in Santa’s Rockin’ Reindeer: Christmas in July! an elf disguises herself as a four-legged flyer in order to join Santa’s special singing group, The Rockin’ Reindeer. But she finds it hard to keep her secret long enough to perform in the Holiday Pageant. This original holiday musical is about honesty and elf-esteem, and was written by Tim Fried-Fiori.

Film Reel

MOVIES IN THE WATER AND ON THE LAND.

This weekend there are two fun family movie events: the city of Baytown is hosting a screening of “Inside Out” this Thursday, July 21 at Pirates Bay – see all the details here. Their “Dive in Movies” begin at 8pm on Thursday evenings through August 4; the movies are shown in their wave pool area (waves are turned off) and are included in the daily admission price. And for films on land, head over to Green Street for their “Friday Flicks on The Lawn” -- free movies each fourth Friday of the month projected on a large screen on The Lawn. Families are welcome to bring a blanket or towel and the next screening is this Friday, July 22 of “Pitch Perfect 2,” the sweet singin’ comedy about music. And if you are looking for summer films for kids at movie theatres all over town, my big ole’ write-up about them is here. Kids can see films for $5 or less (some are free!) during the week – it’s a great way to beat the heat and save some bucks.

Shrek the Musical

MAIN STREET THEATER GETS GREEN AT THE MATCH.

Main Street Theater is now presenting all of their Theater for Youth performances at the new MATCH complex (Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston) so it’s an exciting time to take kids to see their shows! They added a special show to their lineup this summer – the wildly popular and swampy “Shrek the Musical,” which is onstage through July 31. It’s the movie brought to life with music – featuring the sweet-n-green swamp-dwelling ogre and his silly donkey fighting a fearsome dragon, rescuing a feisty princess, and learning that real friendship and true love aren’t just for fairy tales! The show is recommended for pre-Kindergarten and up; children under the age of 3 (including sleeping babies) are not allowed in the theater.

Tickets can be purchased here and range from $18-$22. MATCH is located at 3400 Holman Street in midtown Houston.

GISH PICKS is a free weekly email in which I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services.
Please note that I "highlight" events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests. I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? You can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.
