GISH PICKS!

Welcome to this week's "Gish Picks", where I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services. Please note that I "highlight" these events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests.

I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to advertise on Gish Picks? Advertisers can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.

JOIN DANCEPATHEATRE AS THEY PERFORM A PUBLIC DRESS REHEARSAL.

"Al Andalus! The Legend" will be performed this Saturday, August 11 at 8pm at Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex at 2201 Preston Street. Al Andalus is the Arabic name for Andalusia (Southern Spain) during the Moorish rule (711-1492 c.e.).

This production celebrates the legendary exchange of knowledge and cultures, the leaps forward in sciences, math, philosophy and the arts of that period, as well as the relative peace among Muslims, Christians and Jews. A fictional, inter-ethnic love story featuring characters that are based on historical figures moves the entertainment forward. The stage is populated with pilgrims, troubadours, mystics, and other colorful characters. Lucia Rodriguez and Kristina Koutsoudas are among the dancers featured. Music direction by Sharon Joy includes original compositions, and traditional and contemporary music recorded by Arabic and Sephardic musicians, such as Isabelle Ganz.

Audience feedback will be incorporated into the production’s continued development as Dancepatheatre prepares for the final performances May 22 and 23, 2008 at Hobby Center. Tickets are $10/Adults and $5/children age twelve and under.

To purchase tickets, call 713.522.6000. For more information on Dancepatheatre, call 713.524.6545 or log onto www.barnevelder.org.
