WHAT'S YOUR PICK THIS WEEKEND?

Greetings and welcome to GISH PICKS: A GUIDE TO CULTURAL ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES, a free weekly e-newsletter/blog I created as a service to the Houston community in 2003 in which I cull from the loads of activities in our city and pick three weekend events (“PICKS”) to recommend to parents, caregivers, and educators all over Houston. I’m a mom and am always looking for cultural – yet FUN! – events for my family and I am so happy to share them with YOU. My business grows by word of mouth so please enjoy the events and please share this blog. And be sure to tell the organizations you visit that you heard about them from me. And if you’re in Facebooklandia, please sidle over there and like our GISH PICKS Facebook page and share it with your friends and family and elsewhere on social media, too. Don’t want to miss any posts? Click on the drop-down LIKE button and then check “See First” under “In Your Newsfeed.” Thanks!

There is one more week of summer for most of our kids – the Houston Independent School District starts up again on August 22 as do many other neighboring districts. And many private schools open their doors starting next week (hey, it could be worse: in states around the country, many kids are already back in school – wait, that’s a good thing for the parents, right?!). So basically, you have very little time until Summer 2016 wraps up in a beach towel and is gone. So I suggest you do three things:

1) Have lots of downtime with your kids while you can. Step away from the computer (which I’ll be doing soon, ahem), push aside the “to do” list, and hang out and play.

2) Take a day trip with the family. Galveston is, of course, an easy drive away but there are plenty of other day trips, as you can see here in this handy list of day trips from Houston.

3) Sign kids up for summer camp – there are a few camps that are still offering fun for kiddos – search my www.daycampshouston.com database for camps by date and you’ll see all that pop up.

This week’s VIDEO PICK is all about unplugging and getting out and enjoying nature and sun and each other, with the help of Bert from Sesame Street and actor/singer Zachary Levi. Enjoy!

Have a great week, love one another, please share this, and GO.FIND.FUN.

Mary Poppins presented by South Main Baptist Church

“MARY POPPINS” IS VERY MERRY.

This weekend, August 12-14, South Main Baptist Church presents their annual summer musical, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's “Mary Poppins” at the MATCH. This engaging musical is based on the stories of P. L. Travers and the Walt Disney Film. Featuring the “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” nanny Mary Poppins, we see her help the troubled Banks family in early 1900s England. The show starts when jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to family and young Jane and Michael, who have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Her "Anything can happen if you let it” attitude changes everyone’s tune (literally!) and their lives. This version of the story was on Broadway for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Tickets are $10-$48 and can be purchased here. The MATCH is located at 3400 Main Street in midtown Houston.

Houston Museum District

FREE MUSEUMS AND FREE THURSDAYS.

As the summer winds down, it’s fun to find free things – and museums are perfect. Many of our city’s museums are FREE on Thursdays -- and many are also free all the time. Check out the list of free times and free admission offered by the 19 member museums compiled by Houston Museum District here. Included is the Health Museum (free on Thursdays from 2-7pm, open on Mondays) and the Children’s Museum (free from 5-8pm on Thursdays, open on Mondays). You can also check that website for daily events, maps, and information on their quarterly "Museum Experience," in which grouped museums have an open house within walking distance. The next one is Saturday, September 23.

Da Vinci Lab for the Creative Arts & Sciences

AN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM GEARED FOR THE WILDLY CREATIVE!

St. Stephens Church and School have partnered to bring a unique and progressive after school program: the Da Vinci Lab for the Creative Arts & Sciences. The Lab is open to students throughout the Houston area.

Through this joint venture program, students will learn problem solving, abstract thinking, and creative expression and will get to engage with computer programming, 3-D printing, wood working, sewing and laser cutting techniques. Students will have the opportunity to experience intelligent failure and success as they work through their own creative process gently guided by a staff member. Each semester the students will have the opportunity to get to know a local scholar and how they contribute to our community through STEAM. Lastly, as a mission between the joint venture of church and school, students will be able to explore the inherent spiritual element of creativity and collaboration. Thus…STEAMS! Every day, students take what they’ve learned in the classroom and use it to imagine, design, and create amazing works of art. Group and individualized instruction will be utilized throughout curriculum.

Open Monday through Friday, the hours of operation are 3:30-6pm. With flexible attendance option, students have the option of participating every day or as little as one day a week. On site they offer a snack and then kids go into the lab for hands-on creative learning and skill development. Come make with them after school!

For more information, call or email Ryan Hawthorne, 713-528-6665 or rhawthorne@ststephenshouston.org. Space is limited so early enrollment is encouraged. To register, please click here.

What's Your Purpose?

WONDERING WHAT YOUR PURPOSE IS?.

Then join me and wise man Kevin Casey on Saturday, August 20, 3-5pm for “What’s Your Purpose?. This fun two-hour class will help you discover who you are and what you are meant to do – plus we’ll dance! Kevin and I will talk to you about ways to catch your dreams and uncover who you really are, using tools from astrology as well as personal intuition and Ayurvedic medicine. Each participant will learn about their special astrological characteristics and will be given their life path number (using numerology) from Kevin. I will guide everyone with salient questions designed to open your mind to what you really want to do with your life. Each class member will walk away with a better understanding of themselves and their life vision and concrete ideas on how to become who they are truly meant to be, using their newly-written personal mission statement as a guide.

What’s Your Purpose? takes place at Body Mind and Soul at 7951 Katy Freeway, on the south side of I-10 between Antoine and Chimney Rock. The cost is $50/person.
