GISH PICKS!

Welcome to this week's "Gish Picks", where I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services. Please note that I "highlight" these events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests.

I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to advertise on Gish Picks? Advertisers can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.

Male Eastern Bluebird Feeding Young in Nesting Box

JOIN NATURALISTS AND VOLUNTEERS AT JESSE H. JONES PARK AND NATURE CENTER TO HELP BIRDS AND ENJOY WILDFLOWERS.

This weekend, Jesse H. Jones Park at 20634 Kenswick Drive is hosting two nature events:

  • Build a Bluebird Box
    Saturday, September 15 at 10am
Once a common bird, the Eastern Bluebird population is in decline due to pesticides, predation, habitat destruction, and loss of nesting sites. Join a naturalist to learn how to help these beautiful insect-eating birds and build a nest box to place in your yard. Bluebird boxes are limited to one per household; reservations are required.
  • Wildflower Walk
    Sunday, September 16 at 2pm
Many people believe that spring is the only time of year to view colorful wildflowers, but fall is also a wonderful time of year to view them. Park visitors will join volunteer Paul Roling on a walk to view some of the common and not-so-common wildflowers in bloom at the park during the fall season.

Beauty and the Beast

THE CYPRESS CREEK FOUNDATION FOR ARTS AND COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT PRESENTS “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”.

The Carranza Puppets interpret “Beauty and the Beast” this Saturday, September 15, for one show only at 10am at The Centrum, 6823 Cypresswood Drive. Please note that no tickets will be issued and that the doors will open at 9am. The classic tale of "Beauty and the Beast" expounds on the virtues of appreciating others for their inner beauty and not simply for their outer physical appearance and is a perfect moral lesson for children.

Since 1977, Carranza Puppets has been dedicated to bringing quality marionette and hand puppet shows to children that are educational as well as entertaining. This traveling company primarily serves the Houston area, and also travels the states of Texas and Louisiana. Using exquisitely handcrafted marionettes, Carranza Puppets programs include original music orchestrated especially for each production. Parents please note: This is the original story of Beauty and the Beast; it is not the Disney movie version!
