GISH PICKS!

Welcome to this week's "Gish Picks", where I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services. Please note that I "highlight" these events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests.

I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? Advertisers can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.

SPECIAL NOTE: I am leading a great workshop for families and parent (or caregiver)/child pairs. It's an "I Can Fly!" art workshop in which parents will learn how to encourage their children to follow their heart, kids will learn about what makes them sing, and the family group will get to make a piece of art together. Join me at Body Mind & Soul next Saturday, November 8 at 2pm; you can sign up in advance or as a walk up for $5 extra. For more information, click here. This is a great way to connect with children and to also get in touch with your inner ARTIST and I'd love to see you there!

Miniature Clay Teapot

FORGET HARRY POTTER AND JOIN THESE POTTERS.

This Saturday, November 1 from 11am-3pm, join Houston Center for Contemporary Craft for "Hands-On Houston", a free craft-activity open house for the whole family on the first Saturday of every month. This month, in honor of their upcoming 3rd Annual "Texas Teapot Tournament", members of the Clay Arts Museum and Educational Organization (CAMEO) will lead children and adults in creating mini clay teapots using basic hand-building methods with air-dry clay. CAMEO will also demonstrate finishing techniques, such as stains, sgraffito, and incising. This activity is suitable for all ages and all materials will be provided.

Before or after the activity, get inspired by the beautiful ceramics and functional pottery in HCCC’s current exhibitions, "Warren MacKenzie: Legacy of an American Potter" and "Inspired: Students of Warren MacKenzie". Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is located at 4848 Main Street in the Museum District.

For more information, call 713.529.4848 or log onto www.crafthouston.org. For more information on CAMEO and their Texas Teapot Tournament, log onto www.cameohouston.org.

River Oaks Chamber Orchestra

THE RIVER OAKS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA (ROCO) PRESENTS "CONCERT OF ANGELS" FOR DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS.

In collaboration with the Houston Chamber Choir, ROCO is celebrating "Día de los Muertos" ("Day of the Dead") with a special concert this Saturday, November 1 at 5pm at The Church of St. John the Divine at 2450 River Oaks Boulevard. Robert Simpson will be the Conductor; Matthew Dane, Viola Soloist. Featured pieces will be Daniel Kellogg, Mozart's Hymn; José Pablo Moncayo, Homenaje a Cervantes; and Ralph Vaughan Williams, Flos campi for solo viola, chorus and orchestra; as well as a selection of traditional Mexican folk songs.

Unlike most classical music events, families can bring kids along for "ROCOrooters", a pioneering education program for children ages 2 months through 10 years that runs during the full 90 minutes of each concert at the Church of St. John the Divine location. Children 5-10 years old get fun, active music education and then are invited into the concert for one piece. All children may stay after the concert until 9:30pm for pizza and movies, allowing the parents to go out for post-concert entertainment. Tickets for the concerts are $20 and $25; "ROCOrooters" is $20/first child and $15/additional children.

Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens

IT'S TIME TO VOTE NEXT TUESDAY AND BAYOU BEND HELPS YOUR FAMILY CELEBRATE THIS SEASON WITH A SPECIAL "OLD NEW ENGLAND ELECTION DAY" THIS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2.

Here’s what’s planned:

  • A non-denominational Election Day sermon, calling for a safe and organized Election Day

  • Voter registration with the sheriff

  • A stump speech delivered by the minister extolling the virtues of voting rights

  • Casting ballots for election slogans, which will be tallied using the typical Old New England method of counting corn and beans, with winners announced at 4:30pm

  • Early American games of Quoits (a precursor to horseshoes) and Jackstraws (similar to pickup sticks)

  • A doll-making craft project

  • Musical performances by Dennis Heckathorne and Co.’s fife and drum corps and by the Sideshow Tramps

  • Election Cake

  • A replica of a “Whig Ball.” The large, canvas-covered balls, typically eight-feet in diameter, were adorned with a candidate’s name and rolled from town to town to raise awareness. William Henry Harrison used such a ball in his successful 1840 election against incumbent Martin Van Buren, which resulted in the popular phrase “keep the ball rolling.”

Bayou Bend is located at 1 Westcott Street, off Memorial Drive. For more information, call 713.639.7759 or log onto www.mfah.org/bayoubend.
