GISH PICKS!

Welcome to this week's "Gish Picks", where I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services. Please note that I "highlight" these events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests.

I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? Advertisers can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.

Children's Chukker Tent at the Houston Polo Club

GET TO THE POLO GROUNDS WHILE YOU CAN!

The Houston Polo Club’s fall 2008 season ends this weekend, so grab the kids and head to the fields! If you think polo is out of your league or not for you because you have kids, guess again. The Club’s matches are open to members and non-members alike and to make it more fun for families, the Club has incorporated a free “Children’s Chukker” tent that will have rotating activities just for kids each week. The “Chukkers” program was initiated in the spring and now it’s packed with kids, activities, and fun. The Houston Fire Museum will end this year’s polo season with a blaze as they teach kids about fire safety and give them hands-on access to fire equipment.

The Houston Polo Club showcases the best in the sport of polo and has offered spectacular special events since 1928, including weekly tournaments each spring and fall. This Sunday’s match starts at 3pm – don’t be late because the National Anthem will be sung by a member of the Houston Grand Opera. (Note: the games will be rescheduled in case of rain). Tickets are $25 (open seating) and $50 (reserved seating).

"Cinema Remixed & Reloaded" at the Contemporary Art Museum

FAMILIES ARE WELCOME AT THE CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM.

This Sunday, November 16, from 1-4pm is “Family Day” at the Contemporary Art Museum. This is a great time to bring the kids to enjoy hands-on art activities and tours of the Museum’s exhibitions, “Perspectives 163: Every Sound You Can Imagine” (in their downstairs gallery) and “Cinema Remixed & Reloaded: Black Women Artists and the Moving Image Since 1970” upstairs in the main gallery (note: “Cinema Remixed” is recommended for teens and above).

In “Every Sound You Can Imagine”, experimental musical scores are considered as works of visual art and the cross-fertilization between musicians and visual artists is examined. “Cinema Remixed & Reloaded” is a groundbreaking exhibition chronicling the contributions that black women have made and continue to make to video art. The show presents three decades of work by forty women artists from Australia, Cuba, Europe, Kenya, South Africa, and the United States. Their work represents an ongoing effort to examine individual experience, evoke familial and communal memories, and challenge societal conventions through the use of the moving image within cinematic and visual art. Hurricane Ike Arts Relief Fund

STUBDOG JOINS FORCES WITH THE ARTS THROUGH THE HURRICANE IKE ARTS RELIEF FUND.

Starting today, November 12 through December 12, StubDog will donate half of its profits to the Hurricane Ike Arts Relief Fund. $2 from every ticket sold in Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles will be donated directly to the Hurricane Ike Arts Relief Fund. StubDog understands how difficult it is to maintain the ability to generate capital in the best of times, much less in the face of a disaster. To ease some of this pressure on arts organizations and to help in the rebuilding process, StubDog.com is proud to announce its partnership with the Houston Arts Alliance in an effort to raise funds for the Houston Arts Community.

StubDog is committed to supporting the communities in which it does business and excited to have the opportunity to support the Arts. They hope you will join them in supporting this great cause.
