GISH PICKS!

Welcome to this week's "Gish Picks", where I highlight family-oriented cultural events, products or services. Please note that I "highlight" these events, but I don't know if they are appropriate for your particular children, so choose wisely based on age, maturity and interests.

I know many of you go to events based on GISH PICKS recommendations; PLEASE remember to tell the organization that you are there because of us. Word-of-mouth like yours helps our business to grow. In the same spirit, please also feel free to share GISH PICKS with friends and families.

Do you have something you would like to promote on Gish Picks? Advertisers can promote family-friendly events, products or services to Houstonians all over the city and the surrounding area who are active parents, involved citizens and great shoppers. We love doing this community service and want to keep it free for our readers but in order to justify the hours spent researching, writing and designing this newsletter, we need advertising support. If you'd like to learn more, please click below.

Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens

FREE FAMILY DAY AT BAYOU BEND.

This Sunday, December 20, from 1-5pm Bayou Bend is hosting their final free Family Day – it’s a “Holiday Festival” celebrating the joyous spirit of the season. Music on the lawn will include the fabulous sounds of local talent of all ages as they ring in the season with favorite songs and stories from Christmas, Hanukkah, and more. Kids will be able to create holiday crafts and create their own special heirloom decorations for the season and all guests may tour the first floor of the house and view this year’s Yuletide. Kids’ fave music teacher Rachel Buchman will provide a variety of holiday songs at 1:30pm; fanciful life-sized puppets from Puppet Pizzazz will perform at 2pm and 3:30pm; and St. Nicholas (aka Houston-area storyteller Jacob Millwee) will be reading Clement Clark Moore’s classic poem at 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30pm. Check the website for the full schedule of fun.

Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, Houston’s home for America’s treasures, features one of the world’s great collections of American decorative arts and paintings. The objects are displayed in the home of legendary Houston philanthropist and collector Ima Hogg (1882-1975), who gave her estate to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in 1957. More than 20 room settings reveal the evolution of American style and taste from 1620 to 1876. The mansion is situated on 14 acres of formal gardens and lush woodlands. Bayou Bend is open year-round to visitors, and offers many programs for children, families, and adults.

Admission is always free to Family Day events and the last admission is at 4:30pm. Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens is located at 1 Westcott Street at Memorial and parking is free at the Westcott entrance.

"Amahl and the Night Visitors" presented by Sandra Organ Dance Company

“AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS” ONSTAGE THIS WEEKEND.

Sandra Organ Dance Company, the contemporary ballet ensemble founded in 1997 by former Houston Ballet soloist Sandra Organ Solis, will present four performances of Gian Carlo Menotti's beloved “Amahl and the Night Visitors” this Friday, December 19 and Saturday, December 20, 2:30 and 7:30pm in Hobby Center's Zilkha Hall.

“Amahl and the Night Visitors” is the tender story of a crippled shepherd boy and his mother who receive into their home three journeying wise men following a star. Transformation and magic ensue! Perhaps Menotti's best-known work, “Amahl and the Night Visitors” was premiered by Hallmark Television in 1951, and has been a holiday family favorite for generations. The 45-minute performance is sung in English with original choreography by James Sewell, and incorporates American Sign Language (ASL) into the dancers' movements. This season's performances will be presented with two casts and will include a guest artist from James Sewell Ballet as well as Houston native Chris Hannon as one of its "Wise Men".

Tickets start at $22.

CHRISTMAS WITH A MEDIEVAL TWIST.

Revels Houston is bringing back a production they haven’t done for a decade as this season’s annual “Christmas Revels.” This year’s show will transport audiences to a castle in Medieval England for a celebration of the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. The Fool is using his hilarious antics to entertain the crowd gathered at the banquet hall as they all await the arrival of the King, who finally enters to lead the celebration. But when the joyous festivities are met with evil and the King faces the forces of Darkness, who can save him? Who can defeat Death? You’ll just have to see! The show is perfect for families: it’s full of merrymaking, singing, frivolity, and a Renaissance band - along with a splash of audience participation. And did I mention the dragon???

Revels began with John Langstaff, who recreated the joy of celebrating holiday music with friends and family in a 1957 revue. Although the show was a critical success, it failed financially. In 1970, NBC contacted Langstaff to recreate the show for a television special with Dustin Hoffman as the dragon. Langstaff's daughter, Carol, decided to give the stage show one more try at Sanders Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, an event that eventually launched Revels organizations in major cities across the U.S. When John's nephew, David Langstaff, moved to Houston in 1991, the path was paved for Revels Houston.

Final performances are this weekend, Friday, December 19 and Saturday, December 20 at 2:30pm and 7pm. Tickets are $12.50/kids 12 and under and $17.50/kids 13+ and $25 & $35/adults. All shows take place at the University of Houston’s Wortham Theater.

The exhibition features work from over 50 artists around the world and has all things “angel”: literal representations of angels and abstract angelic images pictured in paintings and photographs as well as works of art reflecting places with angelic names or traditions and angels captured in exquisite delicate jewelry or large scale sculpture.
