Ok, moms and dads and caregivers! It’s July, it’s hot, we made it through the 4th of July fun, and we are still only half-way there. This is good and bad! It’s good if you are having fun and the kids are too and you’ve got your camp plans all lined up. However, it’s bad if you are stressing and the kids are bugging you and you need summer camp help. Play Makers participants join their peers for a full rotation of group activities designed to help even the most timid child find the confidence to step onto the stage. Your young creative masterminds will learn performance skills here that they will use their whole lives.

The Lego Camp Preschool camps are for 3 to 5 year olds and they use LEGO Duplo educational kits to BUILD math and science skills. Students will BUILD simple machines that really work, using gears, levers and pulleys, while BUILDING fine motor skills and confidence. Class themes include “Pirates That Can Build Anything”, “Very Hungry Caterpillar” and “It’s a Bug’s Life”. Building Brains – Lego Camp Elementary I (6 to 8 years) or II (9 to 14 years) camps allow kids to learn to BUILD simple machines using gears, levers and pulleys and then MOTORIZE these machines using LEGO kits and curriculum while BUILDING math and science skills. Class also includes challenges where students will compete against one another to build the best design. Students will understand why a machine works and will learn how to manipulate a machine to go faster or slower. Fine motor skills, critical thinking skills, imagination and confidence will increase in this fun-filled camp atmosphere.

Since 1990, Camp Invention has taken summer fun and transformed it from ordinary to extraordinary! Local educators lead a week of hands-on activities created especially for 1st-6th graders. Boys and girls will spend their time constructing and personalizing a DIY solar-powered cricket with a unique habitat and taking apart electronics to assemble something new. This four-day “camp” for LGBTQI teens will include a wide range of activities, including both indoor and outdoor experiences. There will be a focus on creative activities that will call for self-examination, plus thought-provoking activities that promote a sense of self-esteem and resilience. Some of the activities will include: photography and ceramics; a film, followed by a discussion of the topics raised in the film; kayaking and outdoor team building activities; a panel discussion featuring college-age LGBTQI individuals; and goal setting/planning for the future. Sliding scale and scholarships will be available. A free family assessment is included in the cost of the camp.

Kids can get up close and personal with hands-on science in the Health Museum this summer. Curious minds need look no further. Sign up your child for summer science fun at The Health Museum's Discovery Camps for children ages 5 to 13. Registration is open for 23 different weekly camps held weekdays June 6 through August 19 from 9am-3pm. Camps take place at The Health Museum, 1515 Hermann Drive, in the Museum District. From DNA Discoveries to Forensic Scientist, there is something for everyone.

LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! Teen Moviemaking Camp is a week-long course designed to teach young filmmakers (ages 13-17) how to use a camera to tell a story. “Narrative Filmmaking” takes place from July 25-29. Each student will get hands-on instruction in digital camera operation, lighting, sound and editing while working as a team in the production of a short film. They’ll also work with AFA students who are learning film scoring in their summer camp. The collaborative film will be screened for family and friends at the end of the camp.
