The New School offers a full day of academic and social skills activities. The summer term is a continuation of the academic year with the same teachers and Parent Helpers. The day begins with individualized instruction in reading and math and is followed by lunch, physical activities, and a weekly social skills group led by a licensed counselor. The afternoon is devoted to integrating all major subjects (math, science, social studies and language arts) around a school-wide theme selected by the teachers each year. The major difference between the Summer Program and the rest of the academic year is that the school is open to students who did not attend during the rest of the year. This gives parents who are contemplating a shift to The New School in the Heights an opportunity to evaluate the benefits their child will receive in this environment.
